Reflexology and Pain in Cancer   “Thirty-six oncology inpatients participated in this third pilot study investigating the effects of foot reflexology in which equianalgesic dosing was calculated. Foot reflexology  was found to have a positive immediate effect for patients with metastatic cancer who report  pain, although there was no statistically significant effect at 3 hours after intervention or at 24 hours after intervention. Further study is suggested for foot reflexology delivered by family in the homes for management of cancer pain.” (Stephenson N, Dalton JA, Carlson J, “The effect of foot reflexology on pain in patients with metastatic cancer,” Appl Nurse Res.

Hospitals Using Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the US   “The number of hospitals offering complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) doubled from 7.6% in 1998 to 16.6% in 2002.” Reflexology was among the 16 CAM services assessed in the survey by the 2003 Complementary and Alternative Medicine Survey of Hospitals released by the American Hospital Association’s Health Forum. More than 1,000 hospitals participated in the survey. (“Findings from the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Survey of Hospitals,” Market Wire, Chicago, October 28, 2003)

Britons Turning to Alternative Cures The number of people  using complementary and alternative medicines has doubled over the past six years according to a poll of 1200 Britons carried out for the BBC. The poll found that 21% have used a complementary medicine or therapy in the past year. Herbal medicine was found to be the most popular, used by 34% of those polled. Reflexology and massage were used by 6%. (Similar polls in the US find use of alternative medicines and therapies among 40% of Americans with reflexology use by 2%.)

Reflexology in the News, Vancouver “A spur-of-the-moment decision by Vancouver city council to allow escort services and massage parlors to operate in a new, downtown, home-based-office zoning, threw city hall into an uproar, Thursday. ¼ the council voted not to exclude dating, escort, entertainment and ‘health enhancement’ services as it approved the new zoning which was meant to create a new set of rules for ‘live/work’ units to be built near the central business district. ¼ Most massage parlors in Vancouver have licenses to operate as ‘health enhancement centers,’ for which the city outlines specific restrictions. In order to get a license, a health enhancement center must prove that a manager of the operation has an ‘understanding’ of at least one type of therapeutic technique, The list of recognized techniques includes reflexology, shiatsu, hellerwork,  polarity, reiki, rolfing or the trager approach. Anyone who is hired to perform the massage must be ‘qualified’ in a recognized ‘touch therapy’ and can never, have been convicted of a prostitution-related offence.” (Bula,  Frances and O’Brian, “Escorts okayed to operate in live/work zones,” Vancouver Sun, September, 18, 2003)

England “One in 5 workers is said to suffer from stress. In an attempt to tackle the perennial problem of office stress, companies are coming up with more creative solutions. Complementary therapies have virtually become part and parcel of the staff  benefits’ package.” At Microsoft, workers are offered reflexology and free fruit ¼” (Woods, Judith, “Use a big stick to beat stress,” Telegraph, October 9, 2003)

England “While the odds on contracting a deadly cancer may be shortening, the ways of protecting yourself are straight forward and simple. Here, four experts give us simple steps to cancer prevention. ¼ “A new report has revealed people prone to anxiety are at greater risk of developing cancer. Alternative therapies such as specific herbs, reflexology, acupuncture, camomile or lemon balm tea and natural sleep products can all be helpful in reducing stress levels and promoting a healthier sleep pattern.” (Clydesdale, Lindsay, “Five ways to beat cancer,” Daily Record, September 11, 2003)

England “The Complementary Cancer Care Trust which provides alternative therapies for cancer sufferers, is launching an appeal to create its own center. The trust with health professionals such as doctors and Macmillan nurses, is to provide treatments such as acupuncture and reflexology to people undergoing treatment for the disease.”

Do you have a longer second toe? The longer second toe is hereditary. If you have one, there’s the possibility that, so will your children. When the longer second toe meets the end of the ‘too-short shoe’, a hammertoe can result in adulthood. A recent caller expressed such a concern about her new born; she didn’t want the child to develop his father’s extremely curled toe. Now here’s the answer for the concerned parent. “Kids who wear tight shoes are more likely to have foot problems later on. But what’s a parent of a squirmy, toe-curling toddler to do? Preschooliams’ brand shoes look like ordinary children’s footwear except for one thing: they have see-through bottoms to help ensure proper fit. Like the rest of the sole, the viewing window is made of durable polyvinyl acetate (think kickballs and teething rings), and the parts are heat fused to prevent cracks of splits. Your child may still trip over his own feet now and then, and let’s face it, a hammertoe is often hereditary. At least you’ll know you did all you could.”
